Remerton Police Address Shooting Near Bars Raising Safety Concerns

REMERTON, Ga. (WALB) – On Saturday, March 16, rumors of a possible shooting on Baytree Place in Remerton spread on Facebook.

WALB was able to confirm the shooting and report that there was a 24-year-old victim who was grazed in the leg by a bullet fragment, fired by the suspect.

Dexter Withers was arrested on Tuesday, March 18. He has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, reckless conduct, discharging a firearm on or near a roadway and felon in possession of a firearm.

“The incident on Facebook said there was a robbery or active shooter situation when in reality it was almost a domestic between two individuals,” Remerton Police Investigator Derric Sinclair said. One Valdosta State University student who lives in the area told WALB she has been afraid to visit the bars.

“Recently, that’s why I haven’t been gone because I’ve been hearing about things happening and people getting shot, so I don’t feel too comfortable, and makes me wonder if there are enough police in the area,” she said.

WALB did request a log of any gun-related incidents in the area in the last year and police told us the only other incident was the one at The Pier in October 2023 when Brianna Long, 21, was killed by a stray bullet while working as a bartender. Her death is still under investigation by the GBI.
