Allegations Lead to Suspension of Mitchell Post 18’s Affiliation with South Dakota Legion Baseball Team

The South Dakota Legion Baseball has taken a grave step by suspending the affiliation of Mitchell Post 18 with the Mitchell Baseball Association due to serious allegations. As a consequence, the American Legion varsity baseball season for Post 18 has been canceled for the upcoming summer.

These drastic measures were initiated pending the completion of all court proceedings, as detailed in an email obtained by the Mitchell Republic. Six former Mitchell Post 18 American Legion baseball players are facing accusations of rape in Pennington County, with their next court hearing scheduled for July.

Furthermore, two Mitchell Baseball Association board members, former head Legion coach Luke Norden, and past president Jeremy Borgan have been charged with misdemeanors in connection to the case, including failure to report the abuse or neglect of a child and misprison of a felony. The South Dakota American Legion’s decision to suspend the affiliation has left the Mitchell Baseball Association with no choice but to forgo the Legion baseball season. The association is set to communicate the next steps to parents and players as they receive them.

In contrast, Mitchell’s Junior Legion will be granted permission to play in South Dakota Class A as usual this summer. Additionally, the South Dakota High School Baseball Association is allowing the Mitchell Baseball Association to participate in the spring 2024 season. However, the commission overseeing the matter needs to conduct a closer examination before providing a conclusive response regarding the future of Legion baseball for the players involved.
