Masked Suspect Could Face More Than 30 Charges

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Jacob Dean Smart, the Astoria man captured in Port of Kalama on Feb. 27 following an alleged multi-day crime spree that spanned five different counties across Oregon, Washington and Idaho, was arraigned in Cowlitz County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Cowlitz County Prosecuting Attorney Ryan Jurvakainen told KOIN 6 News that Smart could be charged with 33 different crimes committed across all three states. Smart currently faces 12 charges in Oregon, 9 charges in Idaho and the possibility of an additional 12 charges in Washington.

The 38-year-old was arrested following multiple police chases that ended in a standoff at an industrial plant on Hendrickson Drive. The Washington crime spree began on Feb. 24, when Smart allegedly burglarized a home in Longview, kidnapped and harassed the homeowner and stole their car. Several of his crimes were committed while wearing a distinct mask, authorities say.
