Cosgrove Addresses RTM

First selectman Jamie Cosgrove addressing the Representative Town Meeting

After 2 voting districts in Branford completed recounts Monday morning, there are no changes to the makeup of the political party makeup of the Representative Town Meeting or its members.

Republicans will hold a 17-13 in the new session, with one fewer member than the previous session.

Recounts were held in the 4th and 5th districts, as they were within 20 votes. Other close races were eligible for recounts, but were declined by those impacted.

The change came from the 7th district, which has three representatives. Formerly the district was represented by two Republicans and one Democrat; the new session will have two Democrats and one Republican.

Without a highly contested top of the ticket, the only significant area in play in the 2019 election was the RTM, the towns legislative body. If the RTM did reverse, the implication could have been significant on major issues like the Parkside application and budgets.

The new political makeup of the major town bodies is as follows:

Board of Selectmen: 2 Republicans, 1 Democrat

Board of Finance (appointed) 3 Democrats, 3 Republicans

Representative Town Meeting: 17 Republicans, 13 Democrats

The vote totals from the 5th District indicate that the people who live closest to Parkside have serious concerns about how that process is being handled.

The lowest vote total for the R candidate equals the highest vote total for the D candidate there.

Is it possible to see turn-out percentages by district as well?
