BRANFORD, CT – Branford high school students will soon be given the opportunity to rename a buoy and rocks located off the coast of Branford. Late last year, Senator Ted Kennedy, Jr. (D-Branford) called for the buoy to be renamed. Connecticut’s State Geologist responded that she and Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are eager to see the name changed, but requested a suggestion.

Senator Kennedy has been working with Branford Public Schools through Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez to initiate an essay contest that will produce the new name for “Negro Heads” buoy and rocks. The Branford School District views this as an authentic opportunity for high school students to write and defend their opinion about what the rock and buoy should be named.

“This takes a real world issue and engages students in a purposeful writing assignment,” said Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez.

“This essay contest presents us with the opportunity to take something negative and turn it into a positive, learning experience for Branford high school students,” said Senator Kennedy. “I want to thank Superintendent Hernandez for being so helpful in putting this contest together. I challenge Branford’s students to think hard and come up with a name that will make our community proud. I can’t wait to hear what our young people come up with.”

The contest will be open to all high school students who reside in Branford, including those attending regional magnet, parochial, or independent high schools. The winning essay will be chosen by a team of Branford residents. The committee is in the process of being formed, but will include Superintendent Hernandez, Jane Bouley, the Branford Town Historian and Branford Community Foundation President Stephanie Farber. The winning essay will be announced by the end of the academic year. The author of the winning essay will receive a $500 scholarship from the Branford Community Foundation and have their essay featured in the New Haven Register. The Register has also offered to publish the runner-up essays.

The essay committee and Branford Public Schools plan to announce contest details in the coming weeks.

This has got to be the stupidest assignment I've ever heard. Should we rename the Chappaquidick Bridge also?

Then the "United Negro College Fund" needs to be renamed also. What about the NAACP- "colored people" is offensive no? Get a job Kennedy...............

We need essays? how about three paragraphs!

here is my idea, here are two reasons I like it.

For example, "Tete Noir: The original name is based on a Spanish word that was acceptable at the time but fell into disrepute later. We replace it with a French term that means the same thing."

What is kind of strange in this story is that, while it alludes to an "unacceptable name" it does not actually mention what the name is! It could at least allude to what the name actually is and what makes it unacceptable. Is this the word that is similar to niger, i.e. black?

To anonymous above. While it may be silly, I am afraid that far sillier things have been foisted upon our students than this relatively innocuous opportunity. It isn't even mandatory, it is voluntary, and the winner gets $500.

If anything, it is a learning opportunity that if you view government as a racket, there are lots of ways to exploit it if you learn how to manipulate the rules. that might in turn lead to learning that too much government intrusion into our daily lives is probably not desirable.

Our teens are far smarter and far more observant than you give them credit for. they have enough sense not to tell adults how silly they look since they know the adults won't listen anyway.

They should just make this be their senior X/Capstone project. Just as ridiculous and just as unnecessary.

@11:25 You state "there are lots of ways to exploit it if you learn how to manipulate the rules." Don't you think giving a student $500 dollars to write a essay is a way of manipulating the rules? Their see no opportunity for a student to write (voluntarily or involuntarily) this essay.Rather than being concerned about more sillier things..how about motivating our students with more substantial learning experiences. You sound like some high school student who hasn't had much life experience.

The politically correct name would be "Black Heads".

Here you go Ted Kennedy,

You can now go and waste the taxpayers money chasing all these places name "Negros Head" which by the way was the name of a pipe tobacco. At least it will give you something to do.
