A new Aldi grocery store and Chase Bank are being proposed for 1151 West Main Street, the lot across from Starbucks off of exit 53 that has remained largely vacant for years. The location was home to a car dealership years ago.

The proposal would see an Aldi, a fast-growing German discount grocery store chain, be located in a 19,000 square foot building, and Chase Bank in a separate 3,500 square foot building.

The project would require 133 parking spaces, and would include a driveway, retaining walls, rock cut walls, storm and sanitary sewer infrastructure and utilities to the site.

Due to the wetlands impacts, the project is first going to the Inland Wetlands Commission for review. The Commission has selected engineering firm Codespodi Associates to serve as the peer reviewer, advising the town on the application and wetlands impacts.

Would you like to see an ALDI's off of exit 53 in Branford?

Trader Joe’s would be so much better to have than Aldi.

Guest

Then go to milford for ur insane prices, aldis offers oragnic options like wholefoods at walmart pricing, the produce alone is worth its weight to be there

Guest

Sorry to say trader Joe's is not expensive at all. Whole foods is

Guest

Would love Trader Joe’s- I don’t know why we can’t get one???

Guest

Guest

Icompletely agree we need a trader Joe's down this way! But, Aldi's is a sister company to trader Joe's they essentially carry the same items just marketed differently.

Guest

I agree

Guest

Agreed!

Guest

Already Branford consumers go to New Haven and West Haven to shop at Aldis for far better pricing and product than Big Y. Forget Traders Joe.

Aldi’s owns a Trader Joe’s so . . .

Guest

Trader Joe's a far better choice than Aldi

Guest

Let's hope the not in my yard people are gone

Guest

Agreed but that was the stony creek people if i recall correctly, this being where exit 53 this is my backyard, being a resident of the historic district. Def want it here

Guest

My backyard also but I can't see that much in square footage or that many parking spaces in that area. That's only if inland wetlands goes for it. They wouldn't let Stop & Shop in there.

I Would Love & Prefer: A Stew Leonard's, A Whole Foods, A Barnes & Noble, A Trader Joe's, As Well....

Guest

I agree, Stews, Whole Foods.

Guest

So silly people. Trader Joe's is owned by Aldi, it's practically the same store. If you want whole foods, drive 2.3 miles past stop and shop and you will arrive at the Fresh Market. Don't keep crying for Costco, after what our town put them through they will never considered branford as a location ever again. Looking forward to shopping at Aldi and saving a ton of money!

Guest

Whole Foods please!

Guest

Where did this come from? And they already have site blueprints drawn up?Couldn’t get a Costco, and within 11/4 miles of this site you have Big Y, Walmart Grocery, Carens Corner. This would put a stake in the heart of Carens...Unbelievable!

Guest

Cartons Corner is horrible, they sell their product slowly and as a result many of their shelf products are closer to expiration than larger stores such as Big Y. Not to mention the very limited selection. Cartons Corner is also out of their minds with the prices they charge. A can of progressive soup costs $3.29 at Carons Corner, that's nearly a full $2 or 200% more than Walmart for a can of soup! It's the same story for nearly everything they sell, wildly overpriced. To add to this the management is often rude and moody (perhaps they don't treat their employees well). I understand the convenience factor, but considering there are other choices with far more selection at a fraction of the price less than 2 miles away it really doesn't make sense. They mainly cater to the boomer generation and older who only shop there because they prefer to shop at a little mom n' pop store and are not price conscious. For the younger crowd Carons is simply not financially logical for more than a last minute item here and there. I would much rather see an additional option for affordable produce and meat than a small overpriced store run by snobby owners (female owner with short dark hair Is incredibly snobby). Carons only benefit is being marginally more convinient location wise (assuming you live in the center or down 146). By the way, Branford Walmart does not sell real grocery items. They sell frozen food, non perishables, milk and some other refrigerated items. No fresh meat, no fresh produce, no deli etc. I would welcome a store such as Aldis to Branford with open arms. If Carons Corner wants to remain competitive in the market then they can lower their "convonience tax" from the current 50-200% to a more reasonable 20-40% above the average big box stores. Otherwise I would have no qualms about seeing them fade away.

Guest

Agree. Caron’s Corner mgmt is not friendly at all...especially owner. And witnessed deli people blow noses right in front of food. YUCK.

Guest

Caron’s Corner is a wonderful place to shop. The employees are kind and friendly. My elderly neighbor shopped there last week and had such a struggle walking home with her groceries. One of the female managers not only carried all her groceries for her, but insisted on walking her all the way home!!!! This kind gesture goes above and beyond great customer service! I love shopping there, if there is something I need that they don’t carry, I ask the manager and he will order it for me. The meat manager is very helpful, the deli department is great and the prepared meals are delicious! In addition, they do a great job hiring and training their cashiers. They always greet me and are super friendly!!!

Guest

I also love shopping at Caron’s. This is a place where the employees are on first name basis with most of their customers. One time when my credit card wouldn’t work, the owner allowed me to leave with my groceries and come back later to pay. I wonder how many corporate stores would have allowed me to do so.

In addition, anytime there are 2 customers in line, an additional register is opened. Customer service is a clearly a priority to the staff there. Everyone is always talking about supporting small businesses, but many continue to support the mega corporations whose owners live out of state.

Carons Corner SUCKS

Guest

Caron's Corner has never cared about the ridiculous prices that they charge. I think they just stamp everything they can $1.00 more then bigger stores charge and if they can get away with higher priced items they can be upwards of a lot more than a dollar higher. It is called GREED! They know that a lot of the seniors can't get too far so they have no choice but to pay such high prices. I know they are small but they could show a little balance in pricing so it doesn't hit the seniors so hard. So if they have to either become competitive or leave, thats karma.

Guest

Caron's....note the correct spelling...is doing themselves in! It has become an inconvenient convenience store that has the senior citizens next door as hostages! Their prices are astronomical! i used to shop there at least twice a week. No more! they have gotten greedy to support all those "family" members.

Guest

That’s already such a busy intersection. Why not occupy the building that sits empty behind Dunkin’ Donuts that used to be a party store. Plenty of parking.

Guest

NOW THIS IS A GREAT IDEA !

Guest

There are empty buildings all over Brantford that could accommodate Aldi's, Branford is not a business friendly Town, makes developers jump through hoops to get anything approved!!!! Odds are five years from now that vacant property will still be vacant!!!!

Guest

There is no question about Branford being Not Business Friendly. You can thank the Stoney Creek crowd plus auto mechanic Kurt Schwanfelder who was elected Town Treasurer. The Town and State will only improve economically with a change to business friendly political leaders.

gobballfan

Big Y and S&S need some price competition. Aldi has upped its game in the past few years. Would really just prefer to see walmart upgrade the current store to a full service store with deli and produce like on Rt 80. I'm surprised they haven't done it already.

Guest

Stew Leonards needs to come to Branford! Much better store than aldis

Guest

We need Stew Leonards there... forget the aldis, trader joes, whole foods.. Stew's needs to be out east here.

Guest

Im guessing u forgot about them tryin to go in milford

Guest

Love Aldi's, great prices . We prob won't get it because Branford thinks they r to good for alot of stores that tried here

Guest

I want to know what the blasting and construction is going to do to the condos right next door, nor to mention traffic impact. Don’t mind the idea, worried about the execution.

Guest

Does anyone know what is going in on North Main Street?

Guest

Love Caron's Corner...shop there all the time. Nobody has ever been rude to me. Big Y and Stop and Shop also expensive...I choose to shop local.

Guest

Only friendly people are the kids at the registers

Guest

I’m not sure why anyone in town would have anything negative to say about Caron’s Corner. All members of their staff are very friendly and helpful. They actually go out of their way to accommodate their customers, the customer service is beyond compare. It would be so nice if there were such kindness at other retail locations in town. It is such a pleasure to shop at Caron’s.

Guest

Totally agree!!! I love Caron’s!

Guest

I could not agree more!!!!

Guest

And who do you think is responsible for hiring and training those kids at the registers?

Guest

Caron's Corner has been in business for a very long time, I have shopped there for many years and have always found the employees to be nothing but friendly and helpful. Love their prepared food items!

Guest

Totally agree!!!

Guest

That intersection is already a mess with Exit 53, Walmart, and the way Main St / South Main St. come together to become East Main St. If they are going to put a high-traffic tenant in that space, they also really need to re-configure how traffic will "flow" through the entire area.

Given how thoughtless so many drivers already are at that intersection, I can easily envision gridlock as people pull into the intersection when there is no room for them there and then remain stuck there when the light for the traffic ahead of them turns red, making it impossible for cross-traffic to move at all.

Guest

Stew has said he will never build another store in Connecticut, thanks to the town of Orange, so stop wishing for it, it’s not going to happen

Guest

Love this idea, hope it goes through

Guest

me too!!!

Guest

Would love Aldi's in Branford. Trader Joe's can also come, there is plenty of vacant spaces. Maybe it would help lower the taxes

Guest

nothing will lower taxes....education has too many chiefs making over 100k that do nothing all day and most people in branford are sheep and tow the line "well martha, I guess we have to raise taxes for education for the kids (even though all the money goes to principals/supers - 2 teachers for every room for kids don't know english)...enrollment down...education budget up!!!. CRazy but true...Taxes will never go down in Branford or CT for Democrats run the place and don't care ...for they work in government and get paid by high taxes....sucka!

Guest

ALDI is one of the most depressing store experiences I have ever had.

A "Whole Foods" or "Trader Joe's" would be so much better for the town.

Guest

Let them all come in on any property that is zoned commercial. Competition is the backbone of the free enterprise system. You provide lower prices and/or better quality or you sink.

Guest

We need Stew Leonards.. Aldi's is so ghetto

Guest

Stew Leonard's be would never come to Brantford. First, it would compete with it's Newington be store. That is why they abandoned the Orange property after it was approved. Second, after the contentious process there, they would hardly want to go through it again considering the Costco fiasco....

Guest

I am a big fan of aldi’s. Bring it on!

Guest

Kind of funny that everyone comments on the grocery store, but how do y'all feel about another megabank coming to town?
