A new Aldi grocery store and Chase Bank have been approved for 1151 West Main Street, the lot across from Starbucks off of exit 53 that has remained largely vacant for years. The location was home to a car dealership years ago.

The project will see an Aldi, a fast-growing German discount grocery store chain, be located in a 19,000 square foot building, and Chase Bank in a separate 3,500 square foot building.

The project was approved with one dissenting vote in Inland Wetlands Commission earlier this year, and unanimously passed Planning and Zoning on June 4.

We will update this article when we have a planned start date.

Great news! Looking forward to having Aldi here in Branford!

Guest

Extremely happy for Aldi's in Branford.

Guest

If this was done without plans to rework what use to be the pretzel it is going to be an absolute traffic disaster.

Guest

ride your bike then greentard

Carol

Very sad. We can develop two bad traffic areas like North Main St and the pretzel but we can't have Costco at exit 56. Crazy! I for one am not happy.

Guest

The Whites live off of exit 56 and will never allow the rift raft of costco to be around them. Time for black lives matter to protest the crackers off of 56 and demand equal justice!!!

The way to get costco is to take down elite whitey off of exit 56!

All those folks off of 56 are self hating white people who are hypocrits that say they are for the common person...SO....march and start protesting for your rights to have costco...BLM!

Will brings jobs for the under served...SHAME WHITEY OFF OF 56 INTO GETTING COSCTO.

NO COSTCO...NO PEACE!

NO Coscto ...NO Peace!!!

Not sure how Steve allows this post. Much more tame and factual ones have been refused. Can't imagine if the race references were reversed, that it would be allowed.

Guest

The Branford democrats prevented Costco from coming to Branford. Knowledge is power. You have neither.

Guest

the elites whites of 56 are democrats...

exit 56 is populated with elite white hypocrits who block costco for that will bring the rift raft to where they live (all the while the pretend to be down with struggle)

Time to bring the struggle to whitey hypocrits of exit 56.

No costco ...no peace.

I.S. Baby!

Guest

the democrats started the KKK...get your history right...democrats are the biggest hypocrits alive....they are the biggest racists ever....they keep more people down than anyone!

Guest

You know the Costco debacle was a personal vendetta against the Cookes. The For Sale sign at the property will be there a long time for the same reason.

Guest

Branford is economically sound enough to support Costco, Aldi’s and Chase Bank.

That's is great news it's going to be better than going to new haven

Guest

next is to have all the Yale people that live in Branford to sell and move to New Haven and be down with the struggle..start shamming people who work at Yale and live in Branford to move to New haven. Those are the biggest hypocrits...Yale employee all say they care and act concerned and pretend to care..well sell you homes and move to new haven and SHOW YOU CARE!!!!

We have to all be down with the struggle....all Yale employees must live in New Haven or they are not down with the cause.

hahahahaahahahhahahahah

This is one of the stupidest comments I've ever read! Gotta sham those hypcrits!

LOL! hahahahahaha

Caron's Corner has weathered many storms, with our help, they will weather this one.Never shopped at Aldi's,excited, not really.

Guest

If you’ve never shopped there, how would you know? It’s a completely different experience than Caron’s. While they carry produce and grocery items, I would bet the greatest part of their revenue is from the deli and prepared foods, neither of which is offered at ALDI.

Guest

Carons is good but they always run out of egg salad...PLUS, the girl with the great bottom left and went to Big Y. :)

Guest

Order your egg salad ahead of time, they will definitely comply or better yet make you own.

Guest

AlDI is a decent store. Itr is based on thrift. Usually socking the most popular 2500 items. They have their own brand... which Tastes suspiciously close to the name brand. There are values to be had and drawbacks such a self bagging.

Guest

Caron's need to start being more competitive with their pricing. Stop gouging customers.

Guest

Caron's Corners has nothing to worry about. They have very loyal customers that will continue to shop there even after Aldi's opens. They have excellent prepared meals.

Guest

I’m happy that ALDI is coming to Branford. We needed another food store, especially as the nearby Walmart does not carry fresh produce, baked goods, or meat. I have saved a lot of money buying staples at ALDI and now can also save the gas from driving to New Haven.

Guest

Why not a Trader Joe’s? We need more healthy grocery options in this area.

Guest

Trader Joes is another German company. It is privately owned and doers not share it's methods or plans for expansion. Very tight ship/ Also built on own brand name products anf thrift.

Guest

Trader Joe’s is usually found near a Whole Foods. Fresh Market is the closest thing, so maybe there will be one in Guilford eventually.

Guest

Guilford would be a good fit for them. TJ is often found near Costco as well, so we blew that one.

JustJoeAKABeans

Most do know Trader Joes's is Aldi's just rebranded for a more upscale feel and pricing.
